Print finishes guide: lamination, spot UV, foil and embossing
What each finish does, which jobs it suits, how it ranks for impact against cost, and the combinations that work.

Two visiting cards can be printed on the same paper with the same design and feel completely different in the hand. The difference is finishing: what happens to the sheet after the ink is on it. Finishes are also where most of the "make it look premium" budget goes, so it pays to know what each one does, what it costs relative to the others, and which combinations actually work.
The finishes, one by one
Matt lamination is a thin matt film bonded over the printed sheet. It protects the ink, deepens colours slightly and removes glare. It is the default on most of our visiting cards, brochure covers and menus, and the base on which spot UV and foil sit best. Its one weakness: large dark areas show fingerprints.
Gloss lamination is the same film with a shiny surface. Colours pop and photos look sharper. Good for posters and photo-heavy covers, less good for anything read under bright lights because of glare.
Velvet or soft-touch lamination feels like suede. It is the finish people stroke without realising. Premium cards and invitation covers use it; it costs more than standard lamination and scuffs if it is treated roughly.
Spot UV is a clear, glossy varnish applied only where you choose, usually the logo or a pattern. On a matt-laminated card the contrast between matt and gloss is what makes it work. It needs a separate vector file that shows exactly where the varnish goes.
Foil stamping presses metallic foil onto the sheet with a heated die. Gold, silver, rose gold, copper and coloured foils are all available. It gives a real metallic finish that no ink can match. Very fine lines break, so keep foil elements bold.
Embossing and debossing raise or press a shape into the paper with a die. It works best on thick, uncoated board where the relief is visible. One bold element reads as luxury; three fight each other.
Die-cutting cuts the sheet to a custom shape: rounded corners, a slot for a card, a shaped tag, a window in a box. Rounded corners need only a small radius to feel soft.

Impact against cost
Not every finish earns its money. Matt lamination is the cheapest large upgrade you can make and almost every job should start there. Rounded corners cost very little and make a card feel softer. Spot UV sits in the middle: a visible step up for a modest addition. Foil and embossing cost more and signal premium unmistakably. A soft-touch card with a single foil logo is the top of the ladder and should carry a quiet design, because the finish is the design.

Combinations that work, and ones that do not
- Matt lamination + spot UV on the logo. The classic. Reliable, affordable, looks sharp.
- Matt lamination + foil. Elegant. Keep the foil to one element.
- Soft-touch + foil. Luxury. Use thick board, 350 GSM or more.
- Uncoated textured board + deboss. Understated and tactile; no lamination.
- Gloss lamination + spot UV. Avoid. The varnish disappears against the glossy film.
- Foil + emboss + spot UV on one card. Avoid. Three finishes compete and the card looks busy rather than expensive.
What finishing means for your artwork
Each finish needs its own layer in the file. Spot UV and foil are supplied as solid black vector shapes on a separate page or layer named for the finish. Embossing dies are made from the same kind of file. Keep finish elements at least 3 mm from the trim edge, and avoid lines thinner than 0.3 mm for foil or UV.
If you are not sure how to prepare the file, send us the design and tell us which element you want finished. We prepare the masks and send a proof that shows the finish area in colour so you can check it before anything is made.
How finishes run through our shop
Each finish is a step on the job card: print, laminate, UV, foil, die-cut, pack. The person in charge of the card ticks each step as it is completed, and the card cannot be dispatched until every step is done. That is how a spot-UV card does not leave without its UV, and why a reorder six months later comes out identical.
See the finish options and live prices on our visiting cards and brochures, or send the job to WhatsApp +91 90165 28799 and we will recommend the finish that fits the design and the budget.
