How we print letterpress
Letterpress is the oldest form of printing and the one that still cannot be faked by a digital press. A plate is made from your artwork, inked, and pressed into the paper hard enough to leave a debossed impression. On a thick cotton board the result reads as craft — which is why it is chosen for the card that has to say something about the person handing it over, and for invitations that will be kept.
It has real constraints, and we would rather say them upfront. Each colour is a separate plate and a separate pass, so one- and two-colour designs are what work; photographs and gradients do not. Fine text below about 6 pt fills in. Large solid areas print unevenly and are best avoided. Designs that respect this — a logo, a name, a line or two — come out beautifully.

Letterpress Printing — questions we are asked
What is the difference between letterpress and normal printing?
Normal offset or digital printing lays ink on the surface. Letterpress presses an inked plate into the paper, so the design is impressed into it — you can feel it. It uses thick, soft boards and one or two spot colours rather than full-colour photographs.
Can you letterpress a full-colour logo?
Not as a photograph or gradient. Letterpress works in flat spot colours, one plate per colour. Most logos simplify well to one or two colours; send yours and we will tell you what will work.
What is the minimum quantity for letterpress cards?
There is no fixed minimum — the plate cost is the same whether you print 50 or 500, so the per-card price falls sharply with quantity. We quote both so you can choose.
Can I get letterpress on both sides of the card?
Yes, with a thicker or duplexed board so the impression from one side does not show through on the other. We recommend it for two-sided designs.
How do I get a quote?
